The Franck Lab is open to working with talented graduate students, undergraduate researchers, and postdocs.
Our research is highly interdisciplinary, so we welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds – and offer a broader range of skill-building opportunities than in a more traditional chemistry lab. Depending on your interests, you can gain hands-on experience in:
- Spectrometer instrumentation & engineering – designing and building custom ESR/NMR hardware, microwave resonators, and control electronics.
- Scientific software development – extending our custom data-processing and simulation software, often with no previous programming experience required.
- Chemical synthesis – designing and making small-molecule spin labels.
- Biochemistry – protein expression, purification, and site-directed spin labeling of proteins such as KRas and proteorhodopsin.
- Analytical & physical chemistry – applying magnetic resonance methods to understand hydration water at biological and material interfaces.
Students joining the lab work with a unique combination of state-of-the-art and custom-built instruments available nowhere else in the world.
Incoming students with an interest in spectroscopy, chemical physics, biochemistry, chemical synthesis, or analytical chemistry are particularly encouraged to get in touch. See our research for more on what we study, or meet the team to see who you’d be working with.
